Successful local business man and friend to the Chamber of Commerce, Barry Dodd CBE, has died suddenly in a helicopter crash.
Barry was piloting the aircraft when it crashed into a field at Aldborough, 16 miles north-west of York, on Wednesday 30 May 2018.
Barry became Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire in September 2014 and was known throughout the area as a successful entrepreneur and wealth creator, especially interested in creating employment in rural areas. Among his achievements were the creation of the Global Services and Manufacturing Group. He was also pro-chancellor of the University of Hull and chairman of the Hull York Medical School. Barry had spoken at Chamber events and was also Chair of York, North Yorkshire & East Riding LEP for six years from 2011.
Bridget Meynell, President of York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said:
“Chamber members, staff and myself were devastated to hear of the tragic loss of Barry Dodd. Barry was one of the good guys, a true gentleman, successful entrepreneur and role model who was hugely supportive of business and the Chamber. Barry showed great leadership in both business and the wider community, giving up so much of his time to help and support businesses; he was an inspiration to so many people. His death will leave a deep hole, he is a great loss to Yorkshire and our thoughts are with his family.”
Paying tribute to Mr Dodd, North Yorkshire County Council leader Carl Les said: “Wherever he went Barry was a positive influence. He carried out his role as Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire with enormous dignity and pride. He added value wherever he went, helping other organisations and people – he will be greatly missed.”
